Peaceful and private

This beautifully-appointed, architecturally designed, 2 bedroom beachfront holiday villa is situated on 3 acres of lawns and gardens. It has its own essentially private, white sand beach which is safe for swimming. You will be able to sit on the contemplation terrace and enjoy picturesque views of the sea within a beautiful rural setting. A coastal reserve adjoins the property to the west and distant neighbours enjoy similarly expansive grounds.

You will be immersed in nature with Little Penguins nesting in the front yard, koalas, kangaroos , goannas, sea eagles and echidnas. The garden also attracts numerous birds including crimson rosellas, superb blue wrens and honeyeaters. The shorebirds are also a feature with hooded plovers, cormorants and oystercatchers.

The accommodation will suit both short and long stays however be warned the most popular comment is that guests wish they could stay longer.

The space

The cottage is ideal for a couple but comfortably accommodates up to four guests.

As the cottage is built of cedar and local limestone it naturally retains its warmth in winter and coollness in summer. The cottage is attached to the owners residence but due to the unique design of the property it is separated by a thick limestone wall, providing total sound proofing as well as privacy for all, should the owners be in residence. As retirees the owners are often away but welcome contact with guests when thye are home.

Guests enjoy the following complimentary benefits: a bottle of bubbly, access to our essentially private beach, winter firewood, penguin viewing, kayaks, stand up paddle boards, beach chairs, a sun shelter and beach towels.

Eco friendly: Tu emuz is largely self-sufficient in water, solar power and recycles all of its own waste water. It has an extensive vegetable garden and a netted orchard of apricots, nectarines, peaches, apples, plums, almonds, figs and berries. To catch sufficient rainwater for the home, gardens and orchard, a supplementary catchment of food-grade black plastic is used to double our rainwater collection.

The Wildlife

Tu Emuz has been described by guests as a “sanctuary within a sanctuary”.

During your stay you will have the opportunity to see an abundance of wildlife as you stroll around the property or along the beach. Keep an eye out for dolphins, penguins, seals, sealions, schools of fish, stingrays, echidnas, koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, and goannas. Our birds at Tu Emuz include little penguins, white bellied sea eagles, wedge tail eagles, black winged kites, sparrowhawks, red-browed (red-tailed) finches, cormorants, pelicans, oystercatchers, superb wrens (most of the males lose their blue colour in Winter), honeyeaters, red wattle birds, crimson rosellas, rainbow lorikeets, silvereyes, hooded plovers and lapwings.

Penguins: There are 15 nesting pairs of Little Penguins on the property. We understand this is the only rapidly growing colony of penguins on Kangaroo Island. Our numbers have tripled since 2019, and now make up 6% of the local population.

The penguins begin mating and nesting in late March, laying eggs from early May, and have chicks through until mid-January. Most pairs have 2 batches of chicks each year provided there is an adequate food supply. Each batch comprises 2 chicks.

Their main predators are feral and domestic cats and dogs, and also goanas. Seals and sea lions, sea eagles and possums can be a danger.
